In the spring of 2022, a small group of Afghan refugees began a journey of healing, connection, and growth in Salem, Oregon. Having been suddenly evacuated from their homeland, many of them faced the unimaginable challenge of leaving loved ones behind while adapting to a new life in a foreign land. The weight of uncertainty and heartache was heavy, but instead of being consumed by despair, they decided to act. What started as a casual weekend activity at Bush Park quickly became much more. Every weekend, they gathered to play volleyball, sharing not only the game but also stories, struggles, and laughter. These moments offered a sense of normalcy and hope. Based on the success of the program, a year later we offered another court to our Ukrainian community who now also participate on a weekly basis.
